What is a Gable end Conservatory and how much will it cost?

A Gable end conservatory is a modern take on the Edwardian conservatory, a traditional design with the addition of a gable roof – like the gable end of a house. This style of conservatory will cost between £11,550 and £20,950.

Design Characteristics of Gable end Conservatories

The key feature of a gable end conservatory is the roof, which instead of sloping back towards the property is upright; for added grandeur the ridge of the roof can be finished with a decorative crest. Inside, a conservatory with a gable roof will have a real sense of space and light.

Conservatories with a gable end roof are usually square or rectangular in design, and can be built upon a dwarf wall, or glazed to the floor.

The mix of modern and period design elements means that gable end conservatories work well with both modern and period homes. Inside, the pitch of a gable roof will make the room seem larger, so perhaps a good choice if the size of your conservatory is limited by ground space or budget.

As with any type of conservatory the cost of a conservatory with a gable roof will depend on how big the conservatory is, the building work involved and the type of roof that you choose.  The table below will give you an idea of the different pricing options.

Roof

The roof is the most expensive part of a conservatory so it is important to consider your options, which are glass, polycarbonate or tiles.

Polycarbonate is a tough thermoplastic. It will stand the worst of the weather and is cheap to transport and install.  Polycarbonate is slightly frosted in appearance so is a good option if you require privacy from overlooking windows but don’t wish to have your roof tiled.  Polycarbonate is the cheapest option with prices starting at £11,550.

If you want a traditional glass roof you will have to pay a little more, but will benefit from added insulation. Glass is more attractive than plastic, but will not give you privacy from the neighbours. A gable end conservatory with a glass roof will cost between £12,900 and £15, 200.

The most expensive option is a tiled roof. A tiled roof will give you insulation and privacy which will allow you to use your room all year round, but will mean a darker space. You can choose a tiled roof or a lighter Guardian style roof. A conservatory with a tiled gable end roof will cost between £16,100 and £18,300.

Size / Measurements

You are limited to what size your conservatory can be – no more than four metres in height and three metres wide. (Four metres wide for a detached property.) These restrictions and your available space should give you an idea of how big your conservatory should be so that you can start to get an idea on pricing.

Building Work

You can choose to have your conservatory built on a concrete foundation or a steel frame. It is worth noting that a concrete base will require more work.

Your conservatory can be built on a dwarf wall, or fully glazed. A wall will of course require more labour, so will increase the cost of your build.

Providing that your conservatory meets certain criteria you will not have to apply for planning permission. The main criteria are that your conservatory needs to be no more than four metres tall and three metres wide for an attached or four metres wide for a detached property. Your conservatory can not be separated from your house by external walls – it must share a wall with your house. There are other regulations and you should research when you plan your conservatory.
